How to prevent MRSA Because there is no drug that can cure MRSA excepting for Vancomycin, it becomes very important to prevent the spread of the superbug infection. The guidelines for preventing MRSA are pretty simple for consumers and include: Hand washing: This is the best method to prevent the spread of MRSA. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer to always keep your hands clean. The ideal method of washing hands is to scrub them briskly for about 15 seconds and then dry the hands off with a disposable towel. * It is recommended that you use another towel to turn the tap off. If available use quaternary ammonium as an adjunct to alcohol and extend its protective action. * Furthermore if you are going on treks or picnics, make sure you carry a hand sanitizer that has at least 62 percent alcohol content in it. Avoid sharing personal items: At any point do not share towels, sheets, razors and athletic equipment like shoes ad MRSA can spread through contamination as well. Do not overindulge in antibiotics: One of the best things you can do when infected with the common cold or a viral flu is to let nature take its course and not go overboard in taking antibiotics. * Take all the doses even if you are feeling better. Only stop the dosage when advised by your doctor. * Remember that indiscriminate use of antibiotics gives rise to drug resistance. * In care your infection does not improve, contact your physician immediately. Cover your wounds: If you have cuts and abrasions, make sure the wounds are clean and bandaged properly. This is because the pus from the infected wound may harbor MRSA bacteria and covering it up will prevent spread of MRSA. Shower after sports activities: If you are participating in any games or soccer matches or even field athletics, ensure that you take a shower after the game. Use soap and water and again avoid using shared towels. Wash bed sheets and other clothes: If you have an open wound that is infected, wash all linens in hot water and add bleach if required. Similarly sanitize all athletic clothes before using them again. In Hospital Settings: *Ask your nurse and doctor to wash hands before examining you * Wash your own hands frequently * Before inserting any IV tubes or even catheters ask the orderly or nurse to sterilize your skin first and ensure that they are wearing masks and gloves. * Do not hesitate to bring it to the notice of your doctor if proper sterilization methods are not followed. |
